Designed for Teachers and Counselors
As stressed by No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum features developmentally appropriate opportunities to reinforce writing and reading skills. The Curriculum is correlated to the following standards and competencies: National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), American School Counselor Association (ASCA), and the academic performance standards all fifty states.
Thematic Reading and Writing Units
Both group and independent readings reflect diverse genres including poetry, personal letters, short stories, and persuasive speeches. Readings from the curriculum also feature universal themes, which easily supplement any language program. Targeted comprehension activities combine with daily writing journal prompts to strengthen student writing skills.
Diverse Vocabulary Development
As stressed by the National Reading Panel (NRP), Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum teaches vocabulary both directly and indirectly by using a combination of methods and contexts. Rich group readings, student-friendly vocabulary explanations, and engaging classroom discussion activities allow students to easily understand and retain word meanings. Program words have been carefully chosen for use in students’ everyday lives and have been scaled for grade-level comprehension.
Supplements and Enhances Core Curriculum
Short Readings and group discussion activities are designed for ease of use in classroom. Vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing worksheets can also be used as rapid reinforcement of a broad range of language skills.
Support For English Language Learners
The DVD, Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain features a Spanish audio track that strengthens comprehension for Spanish speaking English Language Learner (ELL) students. In addition, group readings and varied vocabulary contexts give ELL students multiple opportunities to hear the pronunciation of rich new words, which they may not be exposed to in daily communication. To aid ELL students, the Student Workbooks are also available in Spanish.
Addresses Comprehensive Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Needs
The Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum reflects the Guidance Competency Model delivery system components of Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services and Systems Support. The Curriculum lessons are designed to be used to produce change in student behavior. In addressing the Guidance Curriculum component, our lessons are structured to be delivered to all students. They directly express the tenets of the standards and competencies - academic, career development, and personal/social with direct correlations to the Personal/Social Development competencies and standards.
The Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum addresses the components of Individual Planning. The lessons are ongoing and contain systematic activities, which are specifically designed to assist students learn to establish and develop personal goals and enable them to develop future plans. The objective is to use the materials to effectuate positive change in student behavior. When those crises do occur and require Responsive Services, The Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum was developed to address those critical needs. Because the lessons of the Curriculum exemplify a comprehensive developmental guidance program’s goals, the lessons meet guidance counselors’ objectives to implement a comprehensive developmental guidance program that assists them in also addressing the System Support components of campus counseling programs.
Many times teachers are only aware of the academic needs of their students. The infusion of the Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum into the guidance program provides the opportunity for counselors to assist teachers in addressing the comprehensive needs and concerns of their students (academic, career, personal/social).
The implementation of the Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain Curriculum into a comprehensive developmental guidance model creates an inter-disciplinary team effort in addressing students’ needs and educational goals. This interdisciplinary team is the way to have an integrated approach to the total education of a student, so the guidance program is not an isolated or independent part of the school program. One of the best expected results is to have more collaboration between teachers and counselors in achieving student improvement in performance and self-management skills. Counselors and teachers together are now equipped to more readily participate in at-risk student identification and implementation of appropriate guidance responsive services to promote student success. Counselors are now equipped to conduct/participate with the teachers to help increase teachers’ awareness as to how counselors can be proactively of help to them instead of being a last resort for behavioral intervention.
Improves School Climate
The opportunity for counselors to deliver these materials in a counseling curriculum as well for counselors to help teachers use tools that combine these elements allow the campus climate to be less stressful for both students and teachers when children are taught to deal with difficult social issues productively, which leads to more effective learning, more successful testing outcomes, and socially healthier children who will then have the skill set to manage their emotions. Students win because they are taught (1) to be in control of their behavior and (2) to deal with the negative behavior of others resulting in fewer disruptions in class and the sustainability of a more positive learning experience with more focus on instruction for each of them.
