Review
Long ago, the ABC television network made Afterschool Specials that tackled tough kid topics with great believability and sensitivity. Today, the void left by those award-winning programs is filled by the likes of an author-illustrator who has never lost his sense of what it means to face the challenges of being a kid. Trevor Romain acts as a kind of guardian angel to the cartoon characters he's created, and, in this DVD, he helps middle-school student Jack overcome a class bully. With vibrant animation and sharp dialogue, Bullies Are a Pain In the Brain shows how Jack suffers through the humiliation of being abused and insulted by a relentless (and ultimately insecure) kid named Henry. With the help of Trevor and his animated friend Skye, Jack publicly stands up to Henry in the midst of class elections and proves he has both personal dignity and leadership qualities. Viewers will learn effective tools to defuse bullies and boost self-confidence. The pace of the program is a bit slow, but it gives solid lessons and advice. Parents and educators can use a DVD-ROM guide to the lessons to round out this motivational production.
