Review
Superb tone, bright animation, and spot-on scripting add up to a terrific video about the tough subject of death. Author-illustrator Trevor Romain created this DVD to speak to kids in their language and with a beautiful balance of seriousness and whimsy. Trevor interacts with Skye, the wise animated protagonist confused about her emotions regarding the loss of her grandmother. He and her cartoon compatriot Jack help Skye deal with her feelings, especially through an imaginary trip with her departed grandmother. In the end, Skye realizes that her grandmother lives on in her memory. Video extras include a resource guide for parents and educators, a storyboard version that lets kids see how the animation came to be, and a few music videos. The best extra is the one in which the South African-born artist - known as the Doctor of Mischief for his work with cancer-stricken young people - speaks to an audience of children to offer his own personal experiences and advice about dealing with death. Because of its candid and kind approach, this DVD is for any child as preparation or support mechanism for death.
